What is the CF Gala Ball?

Once again we are organising the very popular Cystic Fibrosis Gala Ball. The 2008 Ball will be held in the Four Seasons Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, on the 26th January 2008.

With your help and support over the last two years, we have raised in excess of €360,000.

This money will be used to fund a state of the art Centre of Excellence for Cystic Fibrosis at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin which will contain a 34 single bed unit. As you may know, to avoid cross-infection, it is critical that people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) have access to single bed self-contained units in hospital. St. Vincent’s Hospital, as the national CF adult referral centre, caters for approximately 350 sufferers and it is hoped to have this new 34 bed unit up and running very shortly.

What is Cystic Fibrosis?

Cystic Fibrosis ("CF") is Ireland’s number one genetically inherited killer disease!

Ireland has the highest incidence of CF in the entire world. One in every 1,600 births in Ireland is a child with CF and one in every twenty Irish people carry the gene. As yet, there is no cure.

CF affects the lungs and digestive system leading to repeated chronic chest infections causing permanent lung damage. Hospitalisations are frequent and long. Although we have as yet no cure for CF, tremendous progress has been made in treating the symptoms and improving the quality of life of people with CF.

Although Ireland has the highest incidence of CF in the world, tragically Ireland also has the worst CF survival statistics in the developed world. The median age of death for a person with CF is just 27 years compared to 34 years in Northern Ireland.

Be sure to check out the "CF in the News" page above. All the latest articles on CF in the Irish Newspapers and media is attached.
